Q: What is Jameson Schultz Photography Studio?
A: I began my photography business, Jameson Schultz Photography Studio with a strong focus in a traditional landscape, wildlife, and nature images that were created through exploring places that captivated my imagination. It has evolved to producing more than just a pretty picture, but telling the story of the scene, the emotions of that are woven in the background and the wonder that I felt in each of those moments. The overwhelming majority of my images involve trekking miles into the backcountry, climbing hundreds of feet in elevation, or hours tracking down nature in its true wild form. I have since expanded into providing my photography services for freelance work for event photography and lifestyle photography, but probably one of the more interesting services I provide is photographing adventure and outdoor events. Whether it’s proposals in the backcountry to family rock climbing trips, if it involves anything out of the ordinary, I am inspired to capture it. My business is based out of Normal Heights in San Diego, though my work is available from pretty much anywhere through accessing my website.
Q: Who is Jameson Schultz?
A: It wasn’t long after I picked up my first camera that I knew I would be a photographer for the rest of my life. My college hobby turned into a passion and eventually transformed into a way to capture all those moments I wanted to hold on to. Whether it’s good friends on a weekend climbing trip or a multi-day backpacking trip through pristine wilderness, my camera has been and will continue to be a companion to it all.
I was raised in Southern California, with frequent family vacations and trips to the Eastern Sierras and other nearby wilderness to feed my curiosity. Our house resided nicely concealed in a canyon, where we had more bears and coyotes than actual neighbors. I definitely did not appreciate the immense impact it had on me at the time, but looking back I can easily see how the environment I was raised in led me to where I am, and what I view as most important today.
I spend my weekdays as an engineer for a composites manufacturing company, and spend my remaining time planning and executing trips into wild and beautiful places. I feel like I am getting to be a pro at the whole weekend warrior lifestyle and am transitioning into going all in. Over the past six months, I have been taking steps to make my vision and passion my reality. It’s funny how the 10-year plan, moved to a 5-year plan, and now I’m working to make that my life. It’s been wonderful to see all the hard work with all the miles trekked, hours editing, and everything I have put into it so far starting to gain momentum, which feeds my inspiration to do more.
To be honest, I always told myself, “put in your 10,000 hours and then go for it.” The more I worked at just developing myself and my skills to support my photography business, the more I felt like I was just pushing it off. I wanted nothing more than to make this my work and life, but was and am still am a little afraid of the unknown. After I sold some of my first prints and saw them framed and their new owner’s reactions to not only the work but the stories that were behind each of them, my feelings and fears changed.
Recently, I have expanded into photographing events, and volunteer efforts, which has been just as much, if not more rewarding. I’ll even be a part of a humanitarian volunteer project over the course of 3 months this fall that even though I cannot reveal more at this time, I can’t express how excited and grateful I am that what I have been building will be serving something so much greater than myself. My story has evolved to simply wanting to create work that matters. Though there are so many ways to do so, I aim to tell my story, and the stories of others, raise awareness and inspire some sort of feeling and action that laid dormant in myself for so long. That life is worth living, and our world is filled with incredible people and places that aren’t meant to be seen just on a screen.
Ultimately, the draw for me is getting to these far-out places that few have witnessed and not only experience it all first hand but then being able to bring back those moments as a photograph and reminder. Capturing those seconds from my perspective in a way that can tell a story or provoke emotion and one’s imagination is one of the greatest rewards I get from dragging my camera around. When I throw myself out into those insanely beautiful places, my surroundings pretty much do all of the heavy lifting.
